Rick Hogg is the founder and owner of War HOGG Tactical, Inc. He is a 29-year US Army Special Operations Combat Veteran and Special Operations Forces (SOF) K9 Handler. Rick has taken his 13-combat deployment, both Iraq and Afghanistan, and teaching experience as a Special Forces Advanced Urban Combat instructor and harnessed them into a proven training methodology service company, War HOGG Tactical, Inc. During Rick’s time as a K9 handler, he had the privilege to serve with Combat Assault Dog Duco.
Duco was a dual-purpose U.S. Army Special Operations Forces K9 that served honorably from 2012 to 2017 and deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom alongside his K9 handler, Rick Hogg.
It was due to unfortunate circumstances that Rick and Duco were paired after Rick lost his Belgian Malinois, Marco, in 2012. Ultimately, the pairing turned out to be superlative and the duo an invaluable asset to our armed forces. It is because of Duco and dogs like him that many soldiers are alive today. Hogg speaks with emotion and reverence about Duco’s heroic contributions to the fight: “I’m here on this planet because of that dog.”
As if by fate, Duco and Rick were scheduled to retire at the same time and Duco made an excellent transition into family life. In November of 2020, Duco was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, an aggressive form of bone cancer, in his rear right leg. Veterinarians felt they might be able to prolong and improve his quality of life by amputating the leg and administering chemotherapy. Hogg and his wife made the difficult decision to proceed with amputation and chemo, hoping for the best.
Duco lost his battle with cancer on July 5th, 2021. Rick Hogg’s new mission is to educate handlers/owners on osteosarcoma and what to look for in your canine. Rick desires to continue to keep Duco’s memory alive and has become a huge proponent of CBD for K9s. He believes the benefits of CBD would greatly enhance our military working dogs’ performance.
